WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY?

The Ohm’s open source software certainly has potential for some creative applications. Livid has traditionally manufactured controllers for VJ use, and you can see that reflected in the Ohm 64′s design. For those concerned with portability, it has a smaller footprint than the APC. It’s also hand built in Austin, TX and looks beautiful.

The APC has more buttons, offers visual feedback (two colors), and comes mapped for Ableton. It’s also cheaper and includes a special edition of Live 7 (not 8).  This version will not support mp3 format and limits you to 8 tracks per project.  For the beginning Ableton user, the APC is probably the better value and choice, though if your collection is mostly mp3s, you may have to buy the full version of Live.  Advanced users may also prefer the APC for its ability to integrate Cycling 74′s Max/MSP into Live with an Ableton extension– Max for Live.
